All of us, or rather most of us enjoy a couple of drinks after work, during parties or festivities, however one of the worst things is the morning after. That hangover the next morning is something any alcoholic drinker have experienced at some point. This is the incredibly horrible after effect of intoxication. It strikes at its worst as soon as alcohol leaves the body and dreadful symptoms include loss of appetite, pounding headaches, nausea, dizziness, thirst, and terrible fatigue.

There are always great advice on how to prevent that dreadful feeling, but the following are evidence-based.

The best to prevent is obviously to avoid drinking altogether or instead of going overboard, to drink in moderation simply because the hangover’s severity is directly related to alcohol amounts.

Avoid alcoholic drinks that has congeners, as this is a toxic chemical that forms in the production of alcohol. As soon as a drink contain high amounts of congeners, it increases the intensity and frequency of a hangover. Drinks high in congeners are bourbon whiskey, which is the highest, tequila, cognac, and whiskey. When you take drinks such as vodka, rum, and gin, you find much lower levels with vodka having the least.

A proven fact is to have a drink the following morning and this is where the saying, “the hair of the dog” comes in. on the other hand is it also associated with drinking becoming a problem, simply because some people simply cannot or do not wish to stop after having that hangover drink.

Drink a lot of water the morning after as your system is severely dehydrated and this also makes the hangover more severe. The best advice however is to have a glass of water in between your drinks as you might end up with no hangover at all. Eating a hearty breakfast due to the hypoglycemia restores the blood sugar levels or even a late night meal before you go to bed after you had too many drinks.

Depending where you are in the world, we look at some of the best food and which wine to pair with dishes. If you live in the UK with grey wet weather and it is time for a rich casserole or beef stew the best wines to pair it with is a red, but how full bodied should it be is the other question. With stews, you need wine that holds its own, but when you compare it to a rich sauce it could be overwhelming, therefore is a rustic red such as a Tempranillo, Malbec, Grenache, or Syrah the perfect pairing option.

The best wines to serve with a seared piece of luxurious fish should be lush and full-bodied. Great options are Douro whites, oaked white Rioja, Soave or dry white Bordeaux. Should you prefer red wine with a fish such as Turbot, which has a rich mushroom sauce, we suggest you pair it with a red Bordeaux or Pinot Noir.

Turkey is a favorite dish over the festive periods, but so many people eat turkey on a regular basis due to it taste and low calories and high nutritional values. Picture pickles, ham and cold turkey and what you would drink with it. The ideal pairing should be a young Cabernet Franc, Mencia, or Beaujolais, which are fruity red wines.

If a turkey potpie takes your fancy the pair it with Viognier, Chenin Blanc or Chardonnay. Asian turkey salad on the other hand goes well with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Austrian Gruner Veltlines, or Australian Rieslings. Hot curries pair well with a Viognier or strong rose wine for the milder curries, while a Thai green curry pairs well with Oregon Pinot Gris or an Alsace. The best wines to pair with delicious nut roasts are Languedoc Red or Robust Rhone, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Amontillado Sherry or Pinot Noir.
